Once Disliked.......... Now Liked

Well who does'nt love Bananas....that long yellow fruit we peel and eat which probably most of us include in our daily diet.well we all love it because of the sweet factor but other than that it's good for our heart, kidneys and helps the body to make hemoglobin, which is supposed to be a crucial ingredient in our blood ....also i've read in a health magazine that bananas acts as mood enhancers and mild sedatives because it contains  tryptophan acid.but most us forget or might do'nt know that it's not just Bananas that are healthy .....each and every part of a banana tree has got something in it which can be put to use to make wonderful healthy recipes and we people from Southern India even uses the banana leaf as plates...that's what i want to share with you people that it's not just bananas but the whole banana tree is loaded with useful things.......

[the above picture was taken from google images just to show you how it looks] So as i was going through my Mom's Cookbook, this recipe caught my attention..it's a wonderful Cutlet made out of a Banana Flower..but before i say more about this recipe.....i remember as a kid  i never liked the things that were made using this part, most of the kids never liked it i guess?.....it was like making kids eat broccoli..once during a vacation time me and my cousin went to our banana farm [with that swiss army knife in our hands]and cut down all the banana trees...umm..well not all but we were satisfied because we got to take down atleast some of our enemies...well we did'nt got any medals for our mission but we got a special gift from our Moms [well you can imagine what that could be]...but luckly Grandpa came to the rescue ....i remember him saying "hey it's their vacation time .....and kids will be kids" and also came over to us and asked "did you had fun?"....but we were made to eat the dish made of banana flower again next year when we visited our Grandparents ..but  this time we kids were actually fooled by our Grandma.....actually she made an april fool of us .....she made some cutlets using the banana flower and gave to us telling that it's chicken cutlet....should say we went on eating like it was chicken cutlets and believe me nobody will say that it was made of banana flower....it tasted just like a chicken cutlet..well as far as i  know i think my Grandma passed on this trick to all her daughters and her sisters and relatives ....so that they could make their kids eat something healthy ....but  i love my Grandma....she's the best....oh my Grandpa too....

From that day onwards i slowly started liking things that was made of a banana flower...be it cutlets ,thoren[an other dish made of banana flower, will include that later] or even the khichdi...so i want  to share with you that Cutlet recipe that actually made me like this banana flower....

Banana Flower Cutlet:[picture courtesy :my mom's cookbook]
Ingredients
  1. Banana flower - 1 small or 1 cup, chopped fine
  2. Potato - 2 large
  3. Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  4. Ginger - 1/2 inch, chopped fine
  5. Garlic - 8 - 10, chopped fine
  6. Green chillies - 5-6, finely chopped
  7. Curry leaves - 2 sprig, chopped
  8. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  9. Pepper powder - 1 tsp
  10. Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
  11. Coriander leaves - 2 tsp, chopped
  12. Lemon juice - 1 tsp
  13. Egg white - of 1-2 eggs
  14. Bread crumbs - 1/4 - 1/2 cup
  15. Salt - To taste
  16. Oil - For deep-frying

Method

1. Remove 3-4 outer layers of the banana bud and chop it really fine into a vessel with water, salt, oil and turmeric powder. After 15 mts drain and squeeze out the extra water.
2. Cook the potatoes and mash them well with salt and turmeric powder.
3. Heat oil in a pan and add the chopped onion. Sauté until light brown. Add the chopped green chillies, ginger and garlic. Sauté for 2 minutes. Then add chopped banana flower and salt. Cover and cook for 2 minutes. Open the lid and stir fry until dry. Now add the turmeric powder, chilly powder, pepper powder and garam masala. Stir for a few seconds and add the lemon juice, mashed potato, curry leaves.  Stir at low flame until all the moisture content is completely gone. Check for salt and pepper powder. When it is cooled, make small balls out of it.
4. Beat the egg white adding little salt. Flatten the balls to desired shapes. Dip them in the egg-white and then in the bread crumbs. Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the cutlets (you can also shallow fry it). Drain on to paper towels. Serve hot with tomato sauce...but i like them to have with sliced onions.

it's a great snack people.....tasty as well as healthy ....Should thank my Mom for including this recipe in her cookbook....but it took me a lot of time to find the english words for some of the ingredients used in it .....i hope the next time when you visit a farmer's market or a supermarket do'nt forget to lookout for this banana flower and try it out....i'll post some more good recipes made of banana flower and banana stem in my next blog....take care...........
