I've always been crazy about Sandwiches especially if it's non-veg!! Be it toasted, grilled or normal sandwiches....i can have them till my tummy gets full!! This past week i happened to taste Subway's Chicken Parmesan sub which my sister bought!! I'm not really a regular McD/Burger King/Subway customer or that into junk food. But do'nt know i actually happened to like the taste of this one though....tender juicy chicken with the marinara sauce...all fresh toasted with lotsa melty cheese [BTW i'm a big cheese lover] !! For a sec i just forgot that i'm having junk food 'cause it was so tasty that i could'nt resist to have bite. that's when my sister said "why do'nt you try making a Sub sandwich in your way"... I thought it's not a bad idea...considering i'm a big Sandwich lover!!
As a kid i was always curious to know why these sandwiches were called a sub or submarine sandwiches. So decided to do some research on it. And i came up with some interesting facts from Wikipedia on how Sub Sandwiches got it's name. Wikipedia says, The use of the term submarine or sub is widespread. One theory is that it originated in a restaurant in Scollay Square in Boston, Massachusetts at the beginning of World War I. The sandwich was created to entice the large numbers of navy servicemen stationed at the Charlestown Navy Yard. The bread was a smaller, specially baked baguette intended to resemble the hull of the submarines it was named after
Another theory suggests the submarine was by Dominic Conti (1874–1954), an Italian immigrant who came to New York in the early 1900s.[9] He is said to have named it after seeing the recovered 1901 submarine called Fenian Ram in the Paterson Museum of New Jersey in 1918. Around 1910, he started his grocery store, called Dominic Conti's Grocery Store, on Mill Street in Paterson, New Jersey where he was selling the traditional Italian sandwiches. His sandwiches were made from a recipe he brought with him from Italy which consisted of a long crust roll, filled with cold cuts, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, oil, vinegar, Italian herbs and spices, salt, and pepper. The sandwich started with a layer of cheese and ended with a layer of cheese (this was so the bread wouldn’t get soggy) .....that's it with the history now let's head to the recipe...'cause i do'nt want to blog about history lessons!! hehe....
