Since there are a lot of dishes that includes in an Onam Sadya...i'll share the recipes one by one in the coming days...when i get some free time!!
And if i keep on writing about this festival ... it would take me almost 2-3 hour to write about it in detail the importance of Onam to us Keralites..those who are interested in knowing more about this festival can Google is at your service...but since my favourite thing is food ..i'll blog something about the importance of food and about the dishes served ....Onam ....one of the biggest festivals of Kerala. It's a harvest festival, and celebrates the bounty of nature after a year of hard labour. It is the festival, which the keralites celebrate unitedly without the difference of caste and religion.Onam is harvest festival and is also the state festival for Kerala. Onasadya or onam sadhya is the grand feast that is prepared and enjoyed on the day of onam in Kerala. Onasadya has got significant role in onam festival celebrations in Kerala. Onasadya is a five course meal and is served on banana leaf. There is a system to arrange different dishes that are prepared during as part of onasadya. Rice is the main course and payasam is the sweet and is treated as desert.
Onasadya items/ Menu/dishes: The number items that are served cross more than 30 items as part of onasadya. Fry items, pickles, curries will be part of these items. I remember one of my Aunt adding fruits in the items of the menu
[Thank God i had a picture to show you guys how the Sadya looks....thanks to my sister's Sony Cybershot for saving this picture taken long time back when we celebrated it at our Grandparent's place]
Rice, sambar, parippu, coconut and mango pulissery are the main course items in the menu of onasadya during onam.
Side dishes/ recipe/ items of onasadya would mostly include , Pickles of Pineapple, Tomato and Mango, Kichadi with mango, cucumber and ladies finger, Avial, Thoram with beetroot, beans or cabbage and Kootu with cabbage
Payasam is the main desert item in the menu of onasadya. Different payasams like Parippu payasam, pal payasam and semiya payasam are treated as deserts as items in the menu of onam sadhya.
Also as far as i know additionally traditional malayam dishes like Puttu, appam, Kadala curry and vegetable are also added to the items of menu in onam sadhya feast organized on the day of onam festival in Kerala.Phew ,that's a lot right!
Even the poor people also try to make onasadya with maximum dishes/ items. There is a saying in Kerala that there is no life if one can not enjoy onasadya meal on onam festival day. And it's said that whatever may happen the Grant lunch will not be missed . Another saying in Malayalam says "Kanam Vittu Onam Unnanam" which means, "We should have the Thiruonam lunch even if we have to sell all our properties". That much importance is given to the lunch on the Thiruonam day.
