Sometimes I plan meticulously what I want to cook and other times I find cooking inspiration that strikes me when I'm out and about. I was doing my usual browsing on facebook the other day when I chanced upon something quite wonderful and interesting, different kind of recipes that you can try out with a loaf of bread, which was shared by a friend. There were quiet a few interesting recipes but what struck the most was a dessert recipe, Bread Pudding & the first thing I thought was "I must try this!" quickly followed by "This would make amazing bread pudding!" It just so happened that there was a jar of Nutella in the refrigerator as well and the idea for this dish was borne. It's super easy to make - just like making a few Nutella sandwiches really and it makes the kitchen smell gorgeous whilst it bakes. You can use any normal bread to make these rich treat.
Chocolate French Toast Bread Pudding:
French Toast;
6 large eggs
2 tablespoons sugar
Pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups whole milk
4 tablespoons unsalted butter for the pan, plus more for serving
Eight slices of white bread
Nutella
White Sauce;
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoon condensed milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Method:
In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, salt and vanilla until thoroughly combined. Add milk and whisk to blend
Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a large non-stick or cast iron skillet over medium heat, swirling skillet, until foaming subsides, about 5 minutes. Soak 2 slices of bread in egg bath, turning, until saturated. Add soaked bread to skillet and cook, swirling occasionally, until browned on bottom side, about 3 minutes. Sprinkle top side of bread with sugar, flip, and continue to cook, swirling occasionally, until browned on second side, about 3 minutes longer. Repeat with remaining slices of bread and egg bath.
Spread some nutella on the toasted bread and keep them aside while we make the white sauce.
Sauce:In a saucepan, combine flour and sugar. Add the butter, milk, condensed milk and vanilla and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened. Serve warm over bread pudding.
The finished pudding should be puffy, wait for 5 minutes for the pudding to settle before serving.
How good does it get? Sometimes you can't get that one dessert that was so delicious out of your head. This is so easy to make and one of those desserts you are never going to forget!
