Simple Yet Satisfying

First of all thanks to my good friend, Allan Lobo, for the blog title.

As a kid i never used to like Prawns/Shrimps....and do'nt ask me why...may be it's 'cause it looked slimy or 'cause of it's weird shape which reminds of something else...ehh anyway let's leave it behind!! Few years back when i visited Kerala [my hometown] , I happened to visit my Mom's Cousin's place...for lunch they served normal South Indian dishes [non-veg btw]...along with it they also served this prawns masala...at first i thought i'd say no ...but the aroma was so irresistible that it made me say no...and i made the right decision 'cause the dish was so awesome that i ended up with a happy tummy.

I've always noticed that sometimes Prawns are referred to as Shrimps...which actually confused me a lot...so i decided to do some research on it."A prawn is sometimes called a prawn and a shrimp is called a prawn and a shrimp. Confused? You should be.

The terms "prawn" and "shrimp" are used interchangeably and it does depend on where you live, as to which term will be used. The terms "prawns" and "shrimps" are used in cookbooks, restaurants and markets, but not necessarily correctly.

Some people say that the difference is just in the size. "Shrimps" are used to describe the smaller variety, whilst prawn is used to name the larger members of both species....but let's just forget about all these facts 'cause ultimately there gonna end up inside your tummy,so what difference does it make!!!hehehe

The recipe that i'm gonna share is not exactly the same what i tried ....i added some twist to it, which i often do in most of my dishes , sometimes it's a super flop but sometimes it's a eureka!!!

Marinated Prawns/Shrimps Masala

250 gms prawns – medium sized, shelled and deveined
Tomato- 1 medium sized
Onion- 1 medium sized
Garlic paste/crushed- 1 teaspoon
Chilly Powder- 1 –2 teaspoons
Curry Leaves
Oil- 2 to 4 teaspoons
Tamarind – My Mom said that in most Mallu Seafood dishes....they use a  Mallu variety of tamarind – round ones [really have no idea what's it called], apparently. I used regular tamarind. So if you can find that tamarind go on and add 2 of those[ that's what my Mom said]. Else just soak a little tamarind in water [like i did].

Method

If you are using fresh prawns then par boil it (2 minutes) with very little water, turmeric and keep aside. If you are using frozen prawns they can be used directly.then  you gotta marinate the prawns with little bit of tandoori masala powder, salt and lemon juice for say about 2-3 hrs!!

In a pan pour oil, add curry leaves, onions and sauté till they go just about brown. Add garlic and sauté more. After a few minutes add tomatoes and mix well. Let the tomatoes soften, and oil separate. Add chilly powder, turmeric and salt, mix well. Add the marinated prawns to this and mix well. On medium flame keep mixing this till the mixture dries and stick to the prawns. Add the soaked tamarind pulp and mix. Don’t add water.  The masalas have to cook well and dry out. Don’t take it off flame when still soggy.
I added some ground pepper too- that’s optional. It adds to the flavour, and I recommend freshly ground pepper. that's it...You can serve it with some hot steamy rice or chappatis....

Its amazing how simple it is. I was done in 10 minutes flat! If anybody wants to impress your Husband/boyfriend, Wife/Girlfriend or even your Loving family, I guarantee that this dish will make you win their heart. Simple and most kickass!

Lemme know how it goes! Take care guys.........
